Hi, I'm Kurt Wallant
I grew up on a farmstead between Ortisei and Castelrotto, in a large family where the mountains were part of everyday life. At six years old I was already hiking with my father and at eight I knew the trail names better than most adults. Since then I have never stopped walking.
A deep connoisseur of the Dolomites for over 15 years, I have turned my visceral love for high altitude into a reference point for over 10,000 travellers. I am the founder of Dolomites and Secret Places, the community born to share those remote and precious corners that escape mass tourism.
My golden rule is one: the true essence of the Dolomites reveals itself only to those with the patience to walk. I spend most of my life exploring the territory — I have covered over 2,000 km of trails and personally tested more than 80 hotels.
But the high-altitude experience cannot be complete without the right reward for the palate. I know the flavour map of these mountains inside out: I can tell you where to find the hut with the best canederli or the restaurant that reinterprets tradition with mastery.
Getting to Val Gardena
Visiting Val Gardena without a car is not just possible: it is often more comfortable, more relaxing and smarter.
By Train
The simplest and most sustainable choice. Bolzano, Bressanone, Chiusa and Ponte Gardena with direct buses.
By Bus
FlixBus and other companies stop at Bolzano and Chiusa. From there line 350 climbs the valley.
By Plane
Bolzano BZO (45 min), Innsbruck INN (1h30), Verona VRN (2h), Venice VCE (3h).
By Helicopter
Elikos (based in Pontives): airport transfers and landings near hotels.
By Train — The Simplest and Most Sustainable Choice
Val Gardena has no internal railway station, but is excellently connected via Bolzano (Frecciarossa, Italo, ÖBB, DB), Bressanone (Eurocity from Munich, Innsbruck, Salzburg), Chiusa and Ponte Gardena (regional trains). Direct buses depart from these stations every 15–30 minutes.
From Rome, Florence, Bologna, Verona: Frecciarossa/Italo → Bolzano → Bus 350 → Val Gardena
From Milan: High speed → Verona → regional/Eurocity → Bolzano or Bressanone → Bus 350/351
From Venice: Venice → Verona → Bolzano → Bus 350
From Northern Europe: Eurocity ÖBB/DB → Bressanone → Bus 351 → Val Gardena
Last mile: Direct buses, taxis or Südtirol Transfer (from station to your hotel door).
🎟️ The Superpower: Val Gardena Guest Pass
Many hotels send it before arrival by email. With this pass all South Tyrolean buses become free. You can move freely between Bolzano, Chiusa, Bressanone and Val Gardena without buying tickets or understanding fares.
"Search your inbox for 'Guest Pass'. If the hotel sent it to you, you're already free to move around the entire region without spending a euro."
Simple, fast, intuitive
The valley is served by line 350 (Bolzano → Ortisei → Selva), line 351 (Bressanone → Ortisei → Selva), local shuttles and cable cars that replace the car for reaching altitude.
✅ What You Can Do Without a Car
- Hikes reachable by bus or cable car
- Visit the villages — Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva linked by continuous buses
- Reach altitude by gondola and cable car: Seceda, Alpe di Siusi, Col Raiser, Ciampinoi, Resciesa
- Reach mountain huts with short walks from cable car stations
🚫 What's Not Recommended Without a Car
- Book hotels too far out (San Pietro alto, remote Laion areas, isolated farms)
- Underestimate bus timetables — evening services are reduced
- Choose trails ending far from bus stops
- Think "everything is close" — the valley is 25 km long
"Choose a hotel near the main stops: Ortisei S. Antonio, Santa Cristina Dosses, Selva Piazza Nives. From there you can go anywhere by bus or cable car. Val Gardena is one of the few alpine valleys where a car is truly superfluous."

The 15 most frequently asked questions
The ultimate guide for those who want to experience Val Gardena without a car.
Is it really possible to visit Val Gardena without a car?
Not only is it possible: it's often the best choice. The valley has a bus and cable car network that runs like clockwork. Choose a hotel near the main stops and you'll get around faster than drivers.
What's the best railway station for arriving?
It depends where you're coming from. From the south: Bolzano is perfect. From the north: Bressanone is closer. For regional trains: Chiusa is the most convenient. Direct buses to Val Gardena leave from all three.
How reliable is the bus service?
Reliable like few in Italy. Lines 350 and 351 run every 15–30 minutes. Timetables are precise, even in winter. And with the Guest Pass you don't pay anything.
What is the Val Gardena Guest Pass?
It's your free ticket for all buses in South Tyrol. Many hotels send it by email before arrival. Activate it on your phone and hop on any bus worry-free.
What are the most strategic stops?
Three names to remember: Ortisei – Piazza S. Antonio, Santa Cristina – Dosses, Selva – Piazza Nives. Stay near one of these and you're connected to everything.
Can I reach the cable cars without a car?
Absolutely. Seceda, Alpe di Siusi, Col Raiser, Ciampinoi, Dantercepies: all have bus stops minutes away. In many cases you step off the bus and straight onto the cable car.
What hikes can I do without a car?
The best are: Seceda, Vallunga, Col Raiser, Resciesa, Monte Pana, Alpe di Siusi. All reachable by bus + cable car. No car, no stress.
Are buses crowded in peak season?
Yes, at peak times. But they come often. The trick is simple: leave before 9 or after 10:30. Return before 4 pm or after 6 pm.
Can I bring large luggage on buses?
Yes, but if you have heavy luggage use Südtirol Transfer: they pick you up at the station and take you to your hotel door. Low cost and saves effort.
How do I reach Alpe di Siusi without a car?
Very easy: bus to Siusi → cable car → you're up. Or bus to Castelrotto → shuttle → cable car. The Alpe is one of the most bus-friendly areas in the Dolomites.
How do I know where to get off for my hotel?
Ask the hotel for the exact stop. Example: Hartmann → "Pescosta", Saslong → "Soplases", Acadia → "Selva Centro". Good properties send you the exact stop by email.
How do I travel between the three villages?
With line 350 or 351. They run continuously. Alternatively, walk the Railway Trail: flat, panoramic and full of stops to catch a bus whenever you want.
Do buses run in rain or snow?
They run almost always. The valley is used to bad weather. In heavy snow, buses slow down but don't stop. Cable cars may close for wind, but buses don't.
What's the most common mistake without a car?
Choosing a hotel too far from the stop. The golden rule: maximum 3 minutes on foot from the main stop. Get the hotel wrong and you ruin the holiday.
Why choose Val Gardena without a car?
Because mobility here is a gem. You can reach altitude without driving, visit three villages in minutes, hike without parking hassles and experience the mountains as they should be: free, clean and stress-free.
